Hearing aids are small, clever and surprisingly hard-working. They sit in a warm, sometimes damp environment all day, every day, so a little regular care goes a long way. Most of what makes a hearing aid sound flat is not a fault at all, it is simply a build-up of wax or moisture that is easy to prevent.
Every day
- Wipe them down with a dry, soft cloth before you put them away. Never use water, wipes or cleaning sprays.
- Open the battery door overnight, or set rechargeable aids in their charger, to let moisture escape.
- Store them somewhere dry and away from radiators, windowsills and pets.
Every week
- Check the wax filters and domes. A blocked filter is the single most common reason a hearing aid goes quiet.
- Clean the tubing or earmould if you wear a behind-the-ear style.
- Give them a gentle brush to clear away anything that has gathered around the microphone and receiver.
A few simple habits that help
Put your hearing aids in after your moisturiser, hairspray or aftershave, not before, as those can clog the tiny openings. Take them out before showering or swimming. And if you live somewhere humid, ask us about a drying kit.
When to bring them in
If your hearing aids sound weak or crackly after a clean, or feel uncomfortable, bring them in. Many issues are quick to put right, and a lot of repairs and servicing can be done in the clinic while you wait. A proper service now and then keeps them performing like new.
